Trey Burke Will Likely Turn Pro If Michigan Has Great Season

Apr 26, 2012 11:42 PM

Trey Burke will likely declare for the draft if Michigan advances far into the 2013 NCAA tournament.

"If I have a great season, and we go far, I probably will lean towards coming out," Burke said. "I can’t really speak on that right now, it’s too early.

"But I definitely will look into it and my coaches will help me look into it because they understand the type of situation I’m in."

Burke declined to comment on the results of the NBA's undergraduate advisory board's report.

"I just felt like it was the right decision for me to make," Burke said. "After talking it over with my family, the coaching staff, we kind of pretty much just broke down the pros and cons of leaving and staying, and I felt like the right decision was to stay.

"With the recruits we have coming in, with the players that we have coming back, we have a great chance of being a Final Four, if not a National Championship team."

Mitch McGary To Use Criticism As Motivation At Michigan

Apr 16, 2012 10:24 AM

Mitch McGary, once pegged as the No. 2 overall prospect in the country, has fallen considerably in the national rankings.

"I was top five, then I fell down to top 20," McGary recalled. "They bumped me down because of the game they saw on ESPN. All they saw was me with, like, three points. But I had 15 rebounds. And we won."

McGary played on national television against top 2013 big man Nerlens Noel in January. McGary was 1-for-8 from the floor against Noel and fell out of the top-20 shortly thereafter.

McGary's fall in the rankings is serving as motivation.

"He'll tell you those numbers don't mean anything, but I know it bothered him," McGary's father, Tim McGary, said. "I know it did. Because people started to say things and people started to question him as a player, and he doesn't like that.

"But I think he'll use that. And I think it'll make him better."

Michigan President Opposed To Re-Raising 'Fab Five' Banners

Apr 12, 2012 11:05 AM

Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman told the school newspaper that she opposes putting the "Fab Five's" Final Four banners back up.

“What happened was not good, and I don't think they'll ever go back up. I don't,” Coleman said. “Some day, I won't be president anymore, and maybe someone else will have a different view. But I think you have to reflect on the larger meaning and that we want to hold ourselves to a higher standard.”

The NCAA imposed a number of restrictions and sanctions on the basketball program as part of its punishment for violations that included money going from booster Ed Martin to Chris Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor and Louis Bullock.

Those punishments included 10-year forced disassociation between the school and the four players and the teams they represented.

Webber's 10-year disassociation period is set to end in 2013, meaning the school could re-raise the removed Final Four banners.

Burke Has 'Unfinished Business' At Michigan

Apr 10, 2012 10:37 AM

Trey Burke hopes to compete for a national championship next season.

“I just felt like I could develop more, and me coming back to this team next year, we have a great shot to compete for another Big Ten championship and to compete for a national championship,” Burke said hours after announcing his intention to return to Michigan for his sophomore season. “I feel like we have unfinished business.”

Burke admitted the weeks of deliberation were stressful.

“There was a point where I was considering leaving, (but) I was never really two feet all the way in,” Burke said. “Sometimes I was (leaning) toward leaving, sometimes I was (leaning) toward coming back. But after talking with the coaches and my family, the final decision I made was to come back.

“I think that was the best decision for me. It was more of a risk for me to leave and declare for the NBA draft.”

Trey Burke Returning To Michigan

Apr 9, 2012 2:10 PM

Trey Burke has decided to return to Michigan for his sophomore season, the school announced Monday.

"Over the past few weeks, I have spent a lot of time thinking and praying about my future -- not just about next year but many years down the road," said Burke. "After gathering information, I am excited to be continuing my education at Michigan as we look to accomplish even more in our 2012-13 season.

"I have so much more to develop as both a student and athlete, and there is no better place to do that than here at Michigan. I love my Michigan family and am really excited about playing with my teammates and our incoming freshmen. I want to thank my parents, my teammates and my coaches for the patience and guidance they gave me since this process began a few weeks ago."

The 5-foot-11 Burke averaged 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 36.1 minutes per game in 2011-12.
